U.S House passes advance equal rights amendment
On Wednesday decade-old deadline to adopt the Equal Rights Amendment was removed by the Democratic House.
In early 1970s the ERA was approved by Congress and gave it a deadline in 1982 for it to be enacted if 38 state legislature voted to approve. Last year Virginia became the 38th state to vote in favor. But Illinois and Nevada demanded in federal court in Washington D.C to declare this amendment valid last year.
There have been a 50- 50 approval to this proposal, 60 votes are required for passing this amendment the issue is also in Federal court, and could be headed to Supreme Court
To ratify the amendment, the house voted 222- 204 votes to remove the deadline.
The amendment states in part: ”Equality of rights under the law shall not be abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex.”
”Amendment is still needed” said house speaker Nancy Pelosi. Liberal activist says American women still suffer discrimination over 100 years after winning the right to vote .
Violence against Women act is considered by the house on Wednesday. It was originally sponsored in 1994 by then-Senator, now President Joe Biden , but expires in 2019, and Biden campaign on renewing it.
