White House transfers unused vaccine dosages to states with higher demand

The White House on Tuesday told the U.S. states that they can no longer carry over unordered doses of their weekly COVID-19 vaccine allotments and that unused doses will instead be transferred to states with higher demand, reported the Washington Post.

The Biden administration has presently allocated COVID-19 vaccines state by state based on population. This formula was placed by the Biden administration as some states such as Michigan saw a recent spike in its Covid numbers.

However, in an interview with the Washington Post, White House Coronavirus Task Force Coordinator Jeff Zients stated that the change in allotment of vaccines reflects the next phase in the White House’s efforts to vaccinate the population. Zients added, “There is a need to add more flexibility to the current system.”

The change also comes as new U.S. COVID-19 cases declined for the third week straight. As of last week, around 30.5% of the U.S. population has been fully inoculated.
