Officer who shot Daunte Wright and Police Chief resigned
Monday evening saw crowds defy curfew and emerge in protest after a police officer fatally shot Daunte Wright, mistaking her gun for her taser.
The police officer, Kim Potter, has resigned, along with the police chief, the city’s mayor announced Tuesday.
Potter, a 48-year-old officer and a 26-year veteran of the department, submitted her letter of resignation on Tuesday morning, though the city did not ask her to resign. Police Chief Tim Gannon also resigned Tuesday.
“We want to send the message to the community that we’re taking this situation very seriously,” Mayor Mike Elliott said in a press conference on Tuesday.
Potter was identified as the officer who shot at Wright, 20, during a traffic stop on Sunday. Gannon said he believed Potter mistook her firearm for her Taser when she shot Wright. Body-camera footage of the incident during which Potter shouted “Taser” before firing shows the same.
Protests outside the Brooklyn Center police station on Monday saw hundreds gathered despite the 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew imposed by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Many including Former President Obama have expressed grief over the shooting.
