Serena Williams defeats debutante Pigato, earns first victory in 3 months

Beating Italian tennis player Lisa Pigato with a  career-high WTA singles ranking of 606, 23 time Grand Slam Champion Serena Williams has earned her first victory in more than 3 months.

Williams had accepted a wild-card invitation for the Parma tournament and had beaten the 17- year old 6-3, 6-2 Monday in the first round of the Emilia-Romagna Open.

Pigato who had her first WTA match with former world’s number one women’s singles tennis player asked Williams to pose for a photo with her on-court immediately after the match ended, to which Williams had to say, “It was really cool and gutsy, she’s going to look back (in) years and be like, ‘Well, this was my first match.’ I wish I had done that with my first match, it would have been really cool.”

Williams who now completed her 1001st WTA tour match would be next facing two consecutive Gram Slam title winners and former world No. 1 player in doubles, Czech tennis player Kateřina Siniaková.
